Sigourney Weaver thinks the Alien franchise “deserves a proper ending”.

Director Neill Blomkamp recently revealed he’ll be helming a fresh sequel to the classic sci-fi horror franchise.

Sigourney is reprising her role as character Ellen Ripley in the forthcoming flick and the 65-year-old actress hopes the series will be nearing a solid conclusion soon.

“I would love to take Ripley out of sort of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story,” she told Sky Movies. “So when someone like Neill Blomkamp said, ‘Well, I’m interested in finishing the story,’ my little ears perked up… I think it’s a great series. It deserves a proper ending—I know the fans would love that.”

Little is known about the movie as yet.

But while on a press tour for his new feature Chappie, which stars Sigourney and Hugh Jackman, Neill teased fans with hints about the Alien sequel’s plot.

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens, so it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film,” Neill he said during the Sky Movies chat.

Fans were quick to analyse his comments, suggesting he might be planning to somehow disregard both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, instead picking up the story from the end of Aliens.

Revealing what he found so appealing about signing on to the project, Neill added there are so many concepts to play with.

And one of the ideas the filmmaker is most fascinated by is that of the “Freudian nightmare”.

“That element to me is what is so appealing; to put the audience on the edge of their seat the whole time in a traditional, monster-stalking-you, dark-corridor-way,” he said. “I love that. And then when you mix in all of the design elements and the life cycle of the alien, it’s a powder keg of creativity for me.”
