Tom Hanks: I’m an artist

Tom Hanks views himself as an artist not an actor.

The Hollywood star won best actor Oscars for his roles in Forrest Gump and Philadelphia, but doesn’t measure his success through awards.

He looks to the type of films he’s making and how involved he is in production. The star doesn’t call himself an actor, as he’s proud to be involved in many different aspects of movies. He wrote, directed, starred in and produced his latest offering Larry Crowne.

“I never think about past glories. I am not the kind of person who is content with winning an Oscar. Who knows what the future has in store for me?” he said. “I consider myself an artist and writer before an actor.”

Tom thinks most of his peers feel the same way.

He doesn’t get star-struck when working with greats like Steven Spielberg or Julia Roberts as he knows they are just doing their job, and hoping things go well.

“None of them have delusions of grandeur. Actors are honest people. We just want to tell big stories,” he explained to the Italian edition of Flair magazine.
