Arrietty

This Japanese adaptation of the Mary Norton children’s classic ‘The Borrowers’ sees Olivia Colman (Rev, Tyrannosaur), Mark Strong (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Green Lantern), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), and Tom Holland feature on vocal duty bringing the ‘little’ people alive again in this Studio Ghibli animation.

The floorboards of a suburban Tokyo home hides another world in which the tiny 14-year-old Arrietty lives with her tiny parents. With two old ladies unaware of the their miniature tenants, Arrietty and her family live by “borrowing” everything they have.

When a 12-year-old boy, Sho, moves into the mansion while he waits for urgent medical treatment, he discovers her. The two then begin to confide in each other and soon a friendship blossoms.

This well-crafted and charming story which warms the heart and mind as we learn that a friendship can form in the most unusual circumstances. This heart rendering story is one to be enjoyed by all the family.
