International hit show Bad Jews has arrived in Australia, sparking controversy along the way. Opening night at the Alex Theatre in St Kilda, served up a feast of non-stop laughs and incessant whining from our lead Daphna, which will leave you grasping for your Torah.

Bad Jews was written by New York Playwright Joshua Harmon and received rave reviews on Broadway and the West End. The story is set in New York, and centres on the lives of (Daphna) Maria Angelico, (Liam) Simon Corfield, (Jonah) Matt Whitty and Liam’s unsuspecting non - Jewish girlfriend (Melody) Anna Burgess. Dealing with the loss of their grandfather stirs up raw emotion and sends fanatically religious Daphna into a tirade. Determined to inherit her grandfather’s Chai, Daphna is relentless in her pursuit and won’t let anyone get in her way, especially the stereotypical shiksa Melody.

Directed by the talented Gary Abrahams, Bad Jews is edgy and pushes the boundaries. The controversial play has received hate mail given its provocative name and content. Even though there is only one set and four characters, the 90-minute play moves at a brisk pace. Angelico’s and Corfield’s comedic timing is impeccable and will leave you yearning for more. Special mention goes out to our "bad Jew" Corfield for his unabashed candid humour.

Abrasive, yet hysterical and well worth seeing. Bad Jews has been extended to 19 September at the Alex Theatre.
