For anyone that grew up with the 70’s original the first thoughts on this movie will be why bother, for anyone that hasn’t the first thoughts will be what a cool horror movie. In this case both viewpoints are probably right. Based on the Stephen King debut novel Carrie tells the story of outsider Carrie White, door mouse personality, dowdy puritanical clothes and obsessive Christian mother.

Picked on by the cool kids in her class her humiliation is complete when an incident in the schools girls shower is filmed and put on you tube. This incident however sets off supernatural powers in Carrie that she slowly discovers she can use to her advantage. When she is taken to the prom against her mother’s wishes this is an opportunity for a further humiliating prank only this time she can get her own back. The best thing about this film is that it’s based on a good old fashioned excellent horror story by Stephen King and with that kind of source material you are unlikely to get it very wrong. The only issue is that the lead Chloe Grace Moretz even in dowdy clothes and a shrugging of her shoulders cannot hide the fact that she is very pretty, probably too pretty for the role.

Sissy Spacek from the original managed to look every bit how you would imagine a girl like Carrie to look only to transform herself for the prom night. This is probably a bit cruel, not everyone is Sissy Spacek. If you have seen the original then there probably isn’t much here for you that improves on what you’ve already seen but if you haven’t it’s a great film to go and experience in the cinema. But then afterwards rent or buy the original, the last scene is hands down way better than the 2013 version.
