Tom Thompson is a dreamer. He is also scared of everything, even his own shadow. He is teased by everyone about this and especially by his horrid older sister Lola. So when she tells their parents that Tom is too scared to go into the basement to find a wine bottle, he accepts the challenge. This cellar is not only damp and dark but it is also home to Hugo. A green, slime-dripping ghost or ASG (Averagely Spooky Ghost to those technically minded). He might be harmless but he has run away from another far bigger ghost. An extremely dangerous Ancient Ice Ghost or AIG has chased him out of his old house and now haunts it. Tom takes Hugo to a skilled ghosthunter called Hetti Cuminseed. She was formally of the Central Ghosthunting Institue (CGI) but was considered a little harsh...

With a move toward Childrens cinema it was always going to be 3 elements to mix up into a fine paste, then smear it on the screen. So they firstly have to chose either ghosts or fairies. Second they have to have silly sidekicks and thirdly they must be soft and hard to counter act each other. These three all are inside this little box of tricks. They have the ghostly, goo smearing character with a loveable exterior or Ghost. Then you had to have him befriend a kid, Sidekick. Finally you had to have hard or in this case Hetti (Counterpart). The European arm of Warner Bros must have been over the moon with this film! A film that had the required elements and the right story to make it money making enough to show they have what it takes to move forward. So after all this, did it actually deliver anything that you, your kids, your friends or me, the annoying critical voice of the press...

Well I am going to say it lacked body, pace and boldness. By this I mean it has no real presence on screen, takes a long while to get there and has little much when it needs it. The family feel fake and seem to have been picked by the board of dubbed European extras. They have no family chemistry or dynamic. They have selected a family with no similarity in voice, look or character. This is such a problem as to make it hard to buy any of the concerned parent stuff....Then you have the awful choice of CIG interaction. Now it has a small point of humor but the major point is that it feels so sterile and dull...I felt board and these points dragged. This will make your kids become restless and a little person unconnected to screen is a time bomb of energy, just waiting to explode! We have ups as well...Milo is excellent and funny. He and Hugo have fun and chemistry. They along with Hetti are great and should have really had the film to their very own. Your kids might like it but I would suggest VOD for this one...
