Welcome to 2035 and a planet that has America and Europe joining together to form a mammoth union called the United States of Europe. The rest of the planet is fragments of failed states and failed peoples and is a wasteland. Kurt and Eve are stuck outside, caught in the wasteland and desperate to get into USE at any cost.

A dystopian nightmare film is social commentary and can be used to express a point that often is harder to do so in drama cinema. It is a very well-trodden route into science fiction and political film making. Lucas did it and did it well, as did Alfonso CuarĂ³n (also well), Terry Gilliam (a couple of times) and even Stanley Kubrick (the master and the masterpiece). This film is no exception and in my own opinion a very worthy addition to the above list. I often see post apocalyptical films that either focus more on the debasement of humanity or want to highlight a certain social ill (Pollution in Mad Max 2 springs to mind.) Some are done very well, creating a style, content and experience. Mad Max recently did this, by merging its thrill ride stunts with a social message (Pollution and global calamity). Sadly others are shockingly bad and want to be solely remarkable for a copy + paste film making style.

This film falls into the former category. We can discard much of the external elements of performance in order to grasp at the film makers ultimate intentions. The film is about immigration. Well made in its construction and execution, it deserves to be held in better regard than it has been. By using two very simple components it illustrates its point and keeps you engrossed throughout. The components of mise en scene and story marry well together and build a message. Both are minimal but rich in detail and content. They examine a subject that is filled with political commentary and by using this subtle approach, give a powerful voice to it. This is a film of its time and I suspect will be revisited later on and discussed as others often have. A film that was so ahead that it was missed first time...
