Lemmy from Motorhead opens the proceedings with a line or two from the bard and then… Romeo is in love with a girl called….Suzie and loves to masturbate to computer games. Juliet is a lesbian and in love with her families cook. Her brother also has a thing for her and wants to start having sex. This is in order to make incest acceptable in the world. Dad Capulet is a raving evil monster who always wants sex and to beat his wife. The Monty Qs are led by a drunk and a soft porn film maker…. This is not how I remember it!
In 1996 the international film audiences came to terms with the Baz Luhrmann film Romeo + Juliet hitting screens. That film stormed on to the stage and literally made the bard cool again. People were reciting his works as if they were current language and it became for modern ears, music of the most current and on trend. The only problem for a very select few about the whole story was that, it seemed Luhrmann might have pinched some elements of his film from somewhere else. That somewhere else was this film the wonderfully named Tromeo and Juliet. This retelling is not just amazing in a few simple ways. Where it excels is in every way. Unlike the Decaprio vehicle it is true in its modernised content. The vision in this version is superb because it is a no holds barred excess filled comedy and social commentary.
Bold in the take on the bard, its content is refreshing. The ideas smash together and collide with the classic works. The gay Juliet and her cook lover. The loser Romeo who wanks constantly and is an idiot are but two great ideas. Take the Capulet father who is a sexual deviant and a nasty piece of work. The drunkard father Monty Q is excellent. Piercings and sexual innuendo bounce off the wall with violence and jokes galore.The bards words come in at unexpected times and this pops out to make you remember those school days. Then a massive penis monster comes out and you are back in the Troma world of fun and delight. I can only say that to watch is to see a film so different as to be awesome.
