Eddie Redmayne realised it was “awkward” watching himself play an incestuous son while sitting with his mother in the cinema.

The actor has recalled the uncomfortable moment he was with his family watching himself on the big screen in Savage Grace. Eddie starred alongside Julianne Moore in the film which documents the incestuous relationship between a mother and son.

The star insists the movie didn’t make for painful viewing with his parents.

"I remember taking my girlfriend at the time, her family and my family to watch it at the London Film Festival, and in the first minutes of the movie, I thought ‘What am I doing now, am I crazy!?’ Playing an incestuous son making love to his mum on screen while watching it with your own mother and your girlfriend's one on a big screen, it's awkward, but I was very proud of the movie!” he laughed in an interview with French magazine Jalouse.

Eddie turned 30 in January of this year. The British star says the milestone age didn’t have much bearing on what he was doing.

"To be honest, I didn't even have the time to think about it, during the night of my birthday, I was at the theatre playing Shakespeare's Richard II,” he said.

“I haven't celebrated properly yet, I’m waiting for everything to calm down and then I could be incredibly drunk, humiliated and wake up the next morning suffering from a midlife crisis!”

Eddie has previously been described as the “new Robert Pattinson but with more credibility”. He rubbishes such claims, but thinks they probably derive from the fact that he has an impressive theatre background.

“I've known Robert for a long time - he's a brilliant actor and a wonderful human being. Plus his work has really gained credibility, he's now shooting with David Cronenberg. The notion of credibility maybe comes from the fact that I am a theatre actor. Even in the States, people always admire you if you say that you're doing theatre, it's like you’re more intelligent!” he exclaimed.
