Scarlett Johansson: I’m no femme fatale

(Cover) - EN Movies - Scarlett Johansson finds it frustrating to be seen as a “femme fatale”, insisting she hasn’t played many sexy characters.

The 27-year-old actress is currently promoting her new movie We Bought a Zoo. She has rejected claims that her down-to-earth character Kelly signals a departure from her usual seductive roles. Scarlett doesn’t understand why her confidence is often misinterpreted.

“People seem to think this is a very different role for me, that I always play the femme fatale. But I don’t actually think I’ve played that many traditionally sexy characters,” she told Stylist. “Maybe it’s because I am curvy and confident about it. I think that no matter who I play, people hone in on that somehow, and reduce it all to something that is merely physical.

“In Vicky Cristina Barcelona, I don’t think my character is necessarily a femme fatale. She’s free with her sexuality, but she’s not a vixen – she’s just a confident woman. I think there’s maybe a misconception there; that playing a confident woman is interpreted as you relying on your sexuality.”

In the family movie We Bought a Zoo Scarlett plays a zookeeper. Her co-star Matt Damon is a widowed father who decides to move his family to the countryside and re-opens a struggling zoo in California.

Scarlett loved throwing herself into the scenes with the animals, even if they involved getting messy.

“I think I’m up for every kind of challenge and I like to get down and dirty, yes,” she smiled. “I really liked that aspect of Kelly, that she is a no-frills kind of girl, very grounded and practical, with that salt of the earth quality. That’s the body language I created for her too; she’s comfortable in her body and in her stance.”
