Francis Lawrence is adapting a new dystopian sci-fi series.

The Hunger Games filmmaker has joined forces with Paramount Pictures and will direct the upcoming movie based on the Red Rising series from author Pierce Brown, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Justin Rhodes, who previously worked with Lawrence on Netflix’s video game adaptation Bioshock, will write the script.

Six books have been published so far with a seventh on the way

Red Rising is a 2014 dystopian science fiction novel and the first book in Brown’s series. It is set in the future on Mars, and follows lowborn miner Darrow who seeks revenge after seeing his love die.

Darrow takes on the unfair class system, infiltrating the ranks of the elite Golds as he attempts to bring them down.

Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy will produce alongside Francesco Goedhuis. Brown will executive produce.

Lawrence’s next film is the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which will be released next month.

And, Noah Kahan recently revealed he took writing a song for the movie "very seriously".

The Stick Season hitmaker wanted to do justice to young Haymitch Abernathy and his District 12 girlfriend Lenore Dove when penning Draw You Out for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Noah, who was already a fan of the franchise, told Billboard magazine: “Music is such a massive part of the Hunger Games in a lot of ways.

“And to be able to speak to what the director sees in these characters, what Suzanne Collins wrote these characters for, and to try to match that is a big task - but a really fun challenge.”

Taylor Swift, Lorde, Coldplay and Olivia Rodrigo have all released songs for the blockbuster dystopian sci-fi series, but the pressure came more from wanting to “do justice” to the people behind it all, including author Suzanne Collins and director Francis Lawrence.

He explained: “Not just because of the company that you’re keeping with Taylor, Lorde, Olivia, Coldplay.

“It’s more doing justice to a bunch of people that have a really deep, intimate connection with these characters and these stories, and the trust from a director to be like, ‘you could do this,’ is really special. I take that very seriously.”
