Rose Byrne thinks her Australian accent depicted how "irresponsible" her Bad Neighbours character is.

The 34-year-old keeps her twang from Down Under for her role as Kelly Radner in the comedy movie. Since she often changes her pronunciations for films Rose was happy to keep things natural for a change and believes it contributed to her alter ego's personality.

"Initially I thought [the accent] would be too jarring. Then I thought it could work for the character, because Australians tend to have a wild streak," she explained to metro.us. "It’s a big drinking culture. There’s Irish and Scottish and English descent. And [Kelly] is so irresponsible. She’s not willing to grow up and thinks she can get away with the things she’s doing."

Rose's character faces trouble when she, her husband Mac (Seth Rogen) and their newborn daughter move next door to a fraternity house helmed by student Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron).

She appreciated director Nicholas Stoller avoiding cliché gender stereotypes in the film and her character having equal status to Seth's.

"We really wanted to not make [Kelly] the stock nagging wife," Rose added. "'Don’t go out to the party!' They even have a scene where they reference that, and he says, 'You’ve got to be responsible, you’re the woman' and that misogyny. I think it made for a funnier film, making them a comedy duo rather than have them against each other."

The brunette beauty was also pleased to see how viewers reacted to the storyline and how the characters bounced off each other throughout the movie.

"I have friends, homeowners, who’ve seen it who find it really anxiety-inducing. Then again, kids who are 18 or 19 would probably find our characters really annoying. It represents both points of view," Rose explained. "But I really see Teddy as quite villainous, because he’s so manipulative and vain. And stupid as well. He’s defining himself so greatly around this ridiculous role in this fraternity. Our characters are more bumbling."
