Jake Gyllenhaal thinks social media is "a little scary".

The actor broke onto the movie scene as a teenager in 1999's October Sky, long before websites such as Twitter and Facebook were present. Despite now being a part of many people's everyday lives, Jake refuses to participate and is glad he grew up not having to worry about everything being shared online.

"I wonder what that would be like, actually. To me, this is a product of us all having smartphones and being consumed by that - we're looking down. No one is looking up," he told USA Today. "I take that seriously, even in the midst of being funny. I think it's saying something really important and a little scary."

Over the years things have changed for Jake; especially his outlook on what is important. Since being nominated for a best supporting Oscar for his role in 2005's Brokeback Mountain, the 33-year-old has a new attitude to achieving.

"It's changed for me. For me, success is about my work; being able to continue to work, having choices. And then there are things that are success: my family and interactions that I think are meaningful with them," he added. "Success is looking at myself and recognising how I participate in something, on a day-to-day level."

His constant determination to grow as an actor led him to lose a lot of weight for his latest role as Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. And once filming finished, there was only one meal on his mind to celebrate.

"Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I would drive by that so often on my way to set," he recalled. "It's all I could think about: waffles and fried chicken and maple syrup. And that's what I had."
