Nicole Richie is grateful to be part of a family that likes to have a good laugh.

The 33-year-old fashionista was legally adopted by singer Lionel Richie and his then-wife Brenda Harvey when she was nine years old.

And Nicole says Lionel, who has sold over 100 million records worldwide with hits including All Night Long, loves to joke around.

"I would say my whole family has a pretty good sense of humour," she explained to ET Online. "My dad is a jokester and he likes anybody to smile and if he's the butt of the joke and it's going to make people laugh then he's fine with that. I feel that I'm kind of the same way.”

Nicole shares two young children with her Good Charlotte rocker husband Joel Madden, seven-year-old daughter Harlow and five-year-old son Sparrow.

And according to the matriarch, her kids are also adopting fun-loving personalities.

"My son Sparrow has kind of taken on that persona also,” she noted. “He loves to make people smile and laugh and he doesn't care if he's at the centre of the joke he's just trying to have a good time."

Nicole is preparing to release the final ten episodes of her sophomoric AOL web series #Candidly Nicole this Thursday.

She thinks viewers are going to love the fresh episodes, especially the one where she and comedian Paul Scheer attempt to learn spy techniques.

"We met with an ex-CIA agent and it's important to be prepared you never know what's going to happen. The world is a dangerous place. He taught us some very cool tricks and things to do,” Nicole said, noting she and Paul discovered how to escape the bondage of duct-taped hands.

"Paul Scheer is awesome and it was such an amazing experience to go through with him. Escaping with duct tape is really great. I wish Liam Neeson had known how to do this because then there would have never been a Taken [movie]."
