Jason Schwartzman remembers how confused he used to be when people referred to his mother as 'Adrian'.

The 34-year-old stems from film royalty, his uncle is director Francis Ford Coppola and his mum is screen siren Talia Shire. While Francis is best known for helming The Godfather movies, Talia's most famous role was Sylvester Stallone's onscreen wife Adrian in boxing franchise Rocky.

Asked which film series was cooler to him while growing up, Jason admits it all went over his head.

"Well, it was weird. I didn't really know what The Godfather was, in all honesty," he explained to British newspaper Metro, adding that he was aware of it while visiting Francis' house at the time. "But I think Rocky was a bit more... when I was little I remember walking around with my mom and people coming up to her and saying: 'Adrian!' I think she appreciated it but was also uncomfortable. I remember thinking: 'What is this Adrian' Why do they say this'"

His breakthrough role came at the age of 17 in Wes Anderson's 1998 hit Rushmore, which also featured the director's go-to actor Bill Murray. Since then he's reunited with the filmmaker on several occasions on projects including Moonrise Kingdom and award-winning feature The Grand Budapest Hotel.

But it's director Alex Ross Perry who helmed Jason's latest movie, Listen Up Philip. Jason plays the title character, arrogant and impatient writer Philip Lewis Friedman, and drew upon his experiences to bring the story to life.

"I did have one friend where, let's say, if you were inviting five people to dinner, you really had to discuss whether to invite him," the actor explained. "My friend was even worse than Philip because he didn't realise he was doing it."
