Ellen Page couldn't help "bawling" after working with a baby in her latest movie.

The 29-year-old actress stars in Sian Heder's indie flick Tallulah, about a young woman who saves an infant from an irresponsible mother and then pretends it's her own child. Taking on the role of a mother-like figure was a first for Ellen, and it became a memorable project for many reasons.

"Honestly, it was one of the most interesting, challenging but fulfilling acting experiences I've ever said," she smiled to Total Film magazine. "You just have no other option but to be 100 per cent present and open. I even remember it was going to be her last shot and I wasn't even thinking about it... and I just started bawling my eyes out. It was such a sweet experience to have."

Ellen got caught up in the emotions of her alter ego Tallulah throughout the tale and felt a similar connection to her young co-stars Evangeline and Liliana Ellis as her character did to the baby, known as Madison (played by Liliana) in the movie.

The movie also marked a reunion for Ellen and Allison Janney, who both starred in 2007's Juno, in which the former played a pregnant teenager who gave her child up for adoption. It was a fun experience for the pair and Ellen found herself in pain on set at points because she was laughing so hard.

Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto appears in the film too, with director Sian determined to rope him in for a cameo.

"He's one of my oldest friends," she grinned. "It was a day off shooting Star Trek Beyond, so I said, 'Can you take off your Spock ears and come be in this movie?'"

Orange Is the New Black's Uzo Aduba features too, with the movie set to be released on Netflix later this month (Jul16).
