Ruby Rose reacted “horribly” upon discovering she’d be using sign language in John Wick: Chapter 2.

The Australian model-turned-actress is adding to her movie resume with a role in the upcoming sequel to 2014’s action thriller starring Keanu Reeves as an assassin on a revenge mission following the death of his wife. In the second instalment John is out of retirement and in Rome battling other assassins, including Ruby as a killer called Ares who communicates using her hands.

“I reacted horribly,” she laughed to Total Film magazine when asked what she did when director Chad Stahelski told her about her alter ego’s use of sign language. “But I love that about Chad, he just does not care. It’s really important to me to acknowledge that Ares is not deaf. It’s a way to communicate to her team, so if we are in close proximity to John Wick there’s no trouble speaking. I get to say some very... interesting things in sign language!”

Another plus side to her alter ego is the fact Ruby, 30, got to wear a suit and little make-up, with the Orange Is the New Black star praising her character’s confidence and skills amid a world full of men.

In one scene Ares and John battle it out in a room full of mirrors, which proved to be an exciting experience for both performers.

“Those scenes between Keanu and I were so fun to shoot, but I don’t think they were very fun for the camera operator or the director!” she quipped. “Trying to hide the camera in a mirrored room is impossible. But it’s great because you can’t put a stunt person in either.”

Ruby’s previous training in martial arts and boxing came in handy during production, as the cast and crew all agreed it was best for everyone to act out their own stunts themselves. Hinting at what fans can expect from the action, Ruby describes the stunts as “incredible”.
