Actor Colin Farrell is taking on a futuristic new robot drama based on the short story Saying Goodbye to Yang.

Titled After Yang, the film will follow a father and daughter as they attempt to save the life of a robot big brother named Yang, in a world where robot children are purchased as live-in babysitters.

The movie will be based on author Alexander Weinstein's story, which was included in his 2016 collection, Children of the New World.

South Korean filmmaker Kogonada has written the adaptation, which he will also direct, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It will mark his second movie in charge, after making his directorial debut with 2017's Columbus, a family drama starring John Cho.

The Longest Ride producer Theresa Park previously acquired the rights to Saying Goodbye to Yang last summer (18).

The project will be made for her Per Capita Productions, in collaboration with Cinereach, a non-profit film foundation and production company.

"In Cinereach, I'm delighted to find a partner with distinct taste and integrity, whose sensibility is a perfect match for both Kogonada's unique artistry and Alexander Weinstein's brilliant imagination," Park shared in a statement in June, after securing the deal.

She had previously also optioned the rights to another of Weinstein's short stories, The Cartographers, which was included in children of the New World, too.

Meanwhile, it's the latest film added to Farrell's slate - he will soon begin promoting Tim Burton's live-action adaptation of Disney's Dumbo, while he recently completed work on Guy Ritchie's action crime movie Bush, and assassin movie Eve, with Jessica Chastain.
