(Cover) - EN Movies - Tom Wlaschiha was “perfect for Albrecht” says Resistance director, Amit Gupta.

The filmmaker says he knew almost immediately that Tom was ideal for the male lead role.

The movie shows an alternative history in which the Germans repelled D-Day and began to occupy Britain. Resistance focuses on a small Welsh community, in which all the men have disappeared and the Germans come to investigate.

“Well, I knew that I wanted the German to be in German, so I knew I’d be casting German actors,” Amit explained to Cover Media. “We met quite a lot of actors and I saw Tom Wlaschiha do a couple of things and when I met him I thought, ‘He’s perfect for Albrecht’. He was sort of beautiful looking, but sort of tragically beautiful. I just met him and thought, ‘This is a man who’s carrying some history with him’ - and I found that really powerful.”

Resistance is an adaption of Owen Sheers’ debut novel of the same name. The author and Amit collaborated together to create the screenplay.

The director knew it would be important to get the casting just right on the two central characters.

Tom plays the patrol’s commanding officer, who begins to build an acquaintance with local woman Sarah Lewis, portrayed by Andrea Riseborough.

Amit felt that Tom’s own roots helped him create the perfect Albrecht.

“Tom is East German and there was something that felt more period about him, which sounds ridiculous,” he laughed. “But there was something about him being East German that felt softer and more pained. I knew he was a wonderful actor.”

Resistance is released in the UK on November 25.
