(Cover) - EN Movies - Amit Gupta thinks Michael Sheen gave a “true” performance in his new film Resistance.
The independent drama features up-and-coming actors Andrea Riseborough and Tom Wlaschiha alongside Frost/Nixon star Michael.
Michael is well known for his roles in huge Hollywood films such as Tron: Legacy, the Twilight Saga and Alice in Wonderland.
Amit was delighted that Michael wanted to return to his home country of Wales and take part in the smaller project.
“I think he [Michael] really liked the script,” he said in an interview with Cover Media. “I think big actors, big stars, when they do a film that’s small, or an independent film, they keep it true. Partly because they can and partly because they feel emotionally connected to it.”
The director recognises that there is a mutually beneficially relationship between actors and independent cinema. Big stars can create a magical performance and small films are supported by the recognition of a well-known name.
“There is a type of cinema around that is supported by actors who want to take a risk, and will appear in scenes to bring something to the film,” he explained. “They’re committing for a number of reasons I hope it’s because they love the project and they feel this kind of cinema needs to be out there too.”
The film shows an alternative history in which the Germans repelled D-Day and began to occupy Britain. It focuses on a small Welsh community, in which all the men have disappeared and the Germans come to investigate.
Resistance is released in the UK on November 25.
