From first to third shooter, shooting games promise loads of action-packed scenes and adrenaline pumping through your veins. Fans of games in this category are often awaiting major CS2 tournaments for some life action, but what about films that depict these fun experiences? If you weren’t already getting some shooting action from your favourite films, our list will wow you. Our mix of old and new releases will keep you entertained and adrenaline pumping.

John Wick
From the first instalment of John Wick, one thing was as clear as day — we were in for loads of action and gun violence. But part one isn’t our focus here, because chapter 2 tells an even better story, with much more shoot-outs than you envisioned. Our trigger-happy, puppy-loving assassin makes a comeback as his peaceful lifestyle is once again interrupted. Star actor, Keanu Reeves, is re-enlisted by the Continental to take down a gangster, and violence erupts.
From start to finish, Wick reminds us why he has been dubbed “the most dangerous character” in the film world. The choreography is out of this world, and John Wick’s easy combination of martial arts and gunplay has put this film, chapters 1 through 4, firmly in the “gun-fu” category. Wick’s wicked marksmanship skills are here to stay, and the action has become the benchmark for judging films in this category. With John Wick 5 coming soon, there’s more to enjoy!

The Equalizer (2014)
Star actor, Denzel Washington, dons the cap of the character, Robert McCall, in this action-packed film that every shooting game fan would love. McCall is a retired special ops agent who chooses to use his gun fighting and combat skills for the greater good. Turned vigilante, he takes us through thrilling scenes of close-quarter combats, whipping out interesting guns to save the day. Rife with extraordinary marksmanship in different landscapes, The Equalizer is a dream come true for those who love tactical first-shooter games.

The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix has graced our screens in four instalments, but none of the sequels come as close as the original for shooting game fans. Unsurprisingly, Keanu Reeves embodied this role, stepping into the character of Neo, a computer programmer who learns to manipulate the Matrix while gaining cool powers that aid him in combat. As you’ll imagine, the scenes are laden with duel-wielding firearms, aerial combat moves, and explosive shoot-outs. Nearly three decades later, not many films can match the gunplay or stylized combat in The Matrix.

Wanted (2008)
Assassins make for the best shooting films and Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, and Morgan Freeman played the roles beautifully. Cast as Fox, Wesley Gibson, and Mr Sloan, the three take us through the lives of assassins in a secret society. But we’re not here for breakfast and dinner; Wanted is rife with fighting scenes, impossible tricks, and, most importantly, guns. One iconic scene is where Fox double fists handguns in an epic shoot-out.

Deadpool
Whether you’re a sucker for the first or second instalment of this franchise or prefer the latest release — Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) — that set’s this antihero firmly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you’ll love the shooting scenes. He’s funny and exciting, but officially the MCU gunslinger, sporting guns in both hands. Ryan Reynolds embodies this role, piling bodies left and right. The ass-kicking in this movie gives a vibe similar to that of The Matrix and John Wick. This “merc with a mouth” wouldn’t bore you with his talkative nature, but you’ll enjoy the fighting scenes.

Hard Boiled (1992)
There’s a reason why this film made it to Time Magazine’s 100 best films of the past ten decades, and it is not because of the baby. Tequila, portrayed by actor Chow Yun-fat, is the main character, a Hong Kong detective forced to go track gangsters responsible for his partner’s death. The film opens up with a shoot-out at a tea house where the murder occurs, and that scene alone sets the tone for this action-laden release.
Director John Woo, known for fast-paced action, did a great job with Hard Boiled. The brutal and explosive action features gun fights, non-stop showdowns, and bloodshed. This battle of redemption shows gunfire and debris that left entire sets destroyed, and the hospital scene remains a favourite.

What’s Your Pick?
There are lots of action movies that will appeal to you if you love shooting games. We’ve only mentioned the cream of the crop. Some others that are worthy of mention are Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Heat (1995), Den of Thieves (2018), Taken (2008), and Equilibrium (2002). Of course, style and other factors could mean that your top picks aren’t on this list, so what is? Did we list the best of the best?
