"Producto Local": The 0-peseta series defying industry norms

In an industry often dominated by hefty budgets and institutional backing, an independent Spanish production, "Producto Local," is making waves by proving that compelling storytelling doesn't require millions. Described by its creators as a "0 peseta" series, the project is a testament to raw passion, ingenious resourcefulness, and the power of collaborative spirit, born from what they affectionately term "indie from indi-gent" filmmaking.
While the "0 pesetas" moniker is a nod to their shoestring budget, the reality reveals a meticulously managed, albeit minimal, investment. Approximately €1000 was initially poured into essential props and character-defining elements – from Vinted-sourced costumes and realistic bibles to transforming a former nun’s boarding school into a brothel. To date, the total expenditure stands at a remarkable €4000 for an entire series. This astonishingly low figure is only possible because every individual involved, from actors to crew, has contributed their time, energy, and resources without financial compensation, truly "for the love of art."
Beyond direct financial outlay, the project has thrived on non-monetary contributions. Actors have lent their cars, fuel, and even the homes of friends and acquaintances for shooting locations. As the series progresses, new needs arise, from increased cloud storage for editing to an updated instrument bank for their Colombia-based composer, Jaider. Even Instagram advertising and merchandising are being handled in-house to generate funds for distribution, showcasing a holistic DIY approach.
The production has encountered its share of unique challenges. Filming on public streets has led to unexpected confrontations, with locals occasionally mistaking staged scenes for real-life incidents. The crew has been "kicked off the street" despite legal rights to film, opting to move locations to avoid conflict. A particularly memorable incident involved a simulated public sexual act that prompted a police visit, requiring the crew to prove their fictional intentions with camera footage. Another scene involving a simulated suicide led to an ambulance being called, demonstrating the startling realism achieved on set. Such incidents have taught the team the importance of advanced police notification and employing multiple assistants to manage public perception during sensitive shoots.
The heart of "Producto Local" beats within Sastraka Gaztetxe, a self-managed youth centre in Portugalete, housed in a former nuns' boarding school. This invaluable space, offered free of charge, has become the project's informal headquarters for rehearsals, meetings, and screenings. This partnership highlights the stark contrast between their independent spirit and the often prohibitive costs quoted by traditional institutions. The cast annually fundraises for Sastraka, recognizing the gaztetxe's vital role in supporting diverse community activities, from gardening workshops and hiking groups to theatre performances and a free library, all while fending off developers eager to exploit the building's prime location.
In a surprising twist, the production even secured an altruistic collaboration with Ángel Amor, a renowned designer who has created headwear for Disney blockbusters like "Maleficent" and "Cinderella." Amor not only provided his hat shop as a filming location but also supplied handmade hats for "Producto Local" characters, proving that even major industry talent can be drawn to genuine, passion-driven independent cinema.
"Producto Local" is more than just a series; it’s a powerful narrative of resilience, community, and the unyielding spirit of independent filmmaking. It champions the idea that compelling stories can emerge from the most unlikely of places, built on the sheer determination of those who believe in their craft.
