The UK’s media and entertainment industry reached unprecedented heights in 2025, soaring to a record value of £34 billion. According to the latest figures from the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE), the home entertainment sector—spanning streaming, digital rentals, and physical discs—surged by 10% to hit an all-time high of £5.7 billion.
British Talent Takes Center Stage
The year was defined by the dominance of British talent, with home-grown stars and directors sweeping the top of the charts. Leading the charge was the cinematic phenomenon Wicked. Filmed entirely in the UK and starring British leads Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, it became the biggest home entertainment title of 2025, generating £17.7 million in sales and rentals.
The success story continued across the Top 5:
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II took the number two spot, proving the enduring appeal of the legendary British director.
The papal thriller Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes and based on the novel by British author Robert Harris, became the year's top digital rental.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, led by a predominantly British cast and crew, secured the fourth spot.
Jurassic World: Rebirth, directed by Brit Gareth Edwards and starring Jonathan Bailey, rounded out the top five.
Streaming and Physical Formats Thrive
Streaming remains the primary choice for UK audiences, with 20.5 million homes utilizing at least one service. Netflix maintained its crown as the nation's favorite with 17.6 million subscribers, bolstered by hits like the animated phenomenon K-Pop Demon Hunters.
However, 2025 also saw a remarkable resilience in physical media. Superman (2025) propelled the Blu-ray market to a 3% increase, while Downton Abbey: The Finale enjoyed massive DVD success, selling 56.5k units in just its first two weeks.
A Powerful Creative Economy
Liz Bales, Chief Executive of BASE, described the industry as a "globally admired powerhouse of talent." With the UK Box Office also rising and a record 79 titles making the leap from cinema to home screens, the entertainment landscape has never been more vibrant. As the industry looks toward 2026, the ongoing appetite for original British stories suggests another year of significant growth is on the horizon.
