The rhythmic heart of the North is set to beat louder than ever as Screenbound Pictures and Munro Film officially unveil the trailer, poster, and release details for the documentary feature Northern Soul: Still Burning. This cinematic exploration of one of Britain's most resilient underground movements will debut in UK cinemas on 15th May 2026.
The film invites audiences to rediscover the enduring legacy of a cultural phenomenon that ignited in the working-class communities of the North and Midlands during the late 60s and 70s. What began as a obsession with rare, uptempo American soul music evolved into a high-energy lifestyle defined by exhilaration and legendary all-nighters.
Northern Soul: Still Burning meticulously charts the movement’s transformation through the decades. From the hallowed dance floor of the Wigan Casino to the modern-day clubs where a new generation of "soulies" is setting the floor on fire, the documentary examines the intersection of music, fashion, class, and politics. It proves that Northern Soul is not a relic of the past, but a thriving, relevant subculture that continues to reinvent itself.
Directed by Alan Byron, the 95-minute feature utilizes rare and restored archive footage to transport viewers back to the scene’s peak. It is bolstered by exclusive interviews with key figures and cultural commentators, including Ian Dewhirst, Richard Searling, Elaine Constantine, Russ Winstanley, Wayne Hemingway, and Tony Blackburn, among many others.
To celebrate the theatrical launch, Charly Records is releasing a Special Edition 4-Track EP from the soundtrack on 24th April 2026. The EP features iconic tracks by Eddie Foster, Louise Lewis, Younghearts, and the Furys Band, offering fans a physical piece of the film’s sonic journey.
Whether you were there in the 70s or are discovering the beat for the first time, this film captures the spirit of a movement that refuses to fade away. Be sure to catch Northern Soul: Still Burning when it arrives in cinemas on 15th May.
