Disney and Pixar’s beloved animated franchise has made a triumphant return to the big screen, with Toy Story 5 officially soaring straight to the number one spot at the UK and Ireland box office. Reflecting the immense, multi-generational appeal of the 30-year film legacy, the highly anticipated sequel pulled in a massive £15.3 million over its opening three-day weekend, commanding a staggering 72% of all regional cinema ticket sales.

The animated feature also achieved historic critical and financial milestones on a global scale. Commercially, the film opened to an estimated $312 million worldwide, officially cementing its status as the single biggest global cinematic opening of 2026 so far. Furthermore, the debut marks the largest three-day opening weekend in the entire history of the Pixar franchise, which simultaneously retains its record as the highest-rated film franchise of all time on the review aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes.

The latest installment introduces a modern, timely conflict for the familiar cast of characters, shifting the narrative focus to a "Toy meets Tech" dilemma. The plot sees Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the classic gang's playtime jobs directly challenged when they face competition from Lilypad, a brand-new electronic tablet device. Voiced by Greta Lee, Lilypad arrives with her own highly disruptive, digital ideas regarding what entertainment is best for their kid, Bonnie, threatening the traditional fabric of the toy box.

The film boasts a premium creative lineup, directed by Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton alongside co-director Kenna Harris, and produced by Lindsey Collins. The star-studded voice cast features the iconic returns of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack in their definitive leading roles. Adding to the nostalgic continuity of the film, Oscar-winning composer Randy Newman returns to curate the original score for his fifth consecutive Toy Story feature. Toy Story 5 is screening in cinemas nationwide now.
