For the third season of Apple TV’s acclaimed sci-fi drama Silo, BAFTA Award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer Atli Örvarsson has expanded the series’ sonic world as the story reveals new layers and reaches new depths. Apple TV's Silo is back with its third season, and Örvarsson's soundtrack is out now. New episodes are premiering every Friday through the season finale on September 4. The first two seasons, featuring Örvarsson’s score, are now streaming on Apple TV.
This season, Örvarsson builds upon the series’ musical themes with a lush musical landscape that exists on two extremes of the spectrum: ambient textures that evoke isolation and epic orchestral passages that match the scale and grandeur of the silo. He combines voices, synth drones, degraded acoustic textures, strings, and gritty electronics to evoke the constant hum of life underground, where machinery, memory and human emotion seem to reverberate.
Örvarsson has written much of the Silo score in his native Iceland, where he often develops themes and ideas. He draws inspiration from his childhood living in a small town that felt removed from the outside world, especially during the dark winter months. To capture the show’s post-apocalyptic world, he reimagined traditional instruments and incorporated the Magnetic Resonator Piano, an augmented grand piano that uses electromagnetics, enabling him to continuously shape the sound of each note.
Örvarsson says: “The goal is to make those disparate worlds in Silo feel like one big whole. Almost all the sounds I use are bespoke and homemade rather than coming from sample libraries. I use a hybrid of synths, samples, and live elements that are predominantly strings and voices. When you add the element of recording everything in a really cool-sounding space, like the actual silo in the Icelandic Westfjords, you start to have a very organic, holistic sound world to play with.”
In his illustrious career, the acclaimed Icelandic film and TV composer has scored over 70 feature film and TV projects. He has collaborated with renowned songwriters and composers including RZA, Hans Zimmer, Ólafur Arnalds, Khalid, and Talos.
Örvarsson’s wide range of work spans the romantic comedy of Netflix’s Ladies First starring Rosamund Pike and Sacha Baron Cohen; orchestral and fantastical action of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End to dark electronica in Edge of Tomorrow; and the thematic piano score in The Edge of Seventeen. In addition to his work in film, Örvarsson has scored series including Apple TV’s crime drama Defending Jacob starring Chris Evans, Amazon Prime’s Vaka, Neil Cross’s Sky Original thriller series The Iris Affair, and many of Dick Wolf’s acclaimed procedurals including NBC’s long-running trio: Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med; and CBS’s CIA, FBI, FBI: International, and FBI: Most Wanted, among others.
In Iceland, Örvarsson continues to work with the SinfoniaNord orchestra on his film scores. He also co-founded the INNI label to help bring talented Icelandic artists to a wider audience.
Örvarsson's honors include the BAFTA Craft Award for Original Music, and Emmy, Hollywood Music in Media, Society of Composers & Lyricists, and World Soundtrack Award nominations.
