Eagle Rock Films have won the award for Best Film at The Doc’n Roll Film Festival, the UK’s BFI supported annual Music Documentary Film Festival. Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away is a Globe Production in association with Fís Éireann/ Screen Ireland. It is produced by Alan Maher and John Wallace for Cowtown Pictures and Peter Worsley for Eagle Rock Films and directed by Emer Reynolds.

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away is a feature length documentary focussing on the life and music of Phil Lynott, telling the story of how a young black boy from working class 1950's Dublin, became Ireland's greatest Rock Star. As lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer, a wild man. Told extensively through the words of Phil himself and focusing on some of his iconic songs, the film gets to the heart of Philip, the father, the husband, the friend, the son, the rock icon, the poet and the dreamer.

The film enjoyed its London premier at the Doc’n Roll Festival last month, followed by a UK theatrical run. In Ireland, screenings were delayed due to Covid restrictions, and are now hoped to begin from 26th December. Eagle Vision are planning to release Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in Q2, 2021.

Peter Worsley, MD Eagle Rock Films and producer of the film said, “I am so pleased for Emer Reynolds and all the production team to win this award. It’s challenging to release a film to cinemas in the midst of a pandemic, so I hope that this win will help draw attention to a wider audience”.

Director, Emer Reynolds said, “On behalf of my whole fabulous team, I am thrilled to receive this award from the peerless Doc’n Roll Festival. We are honoured, especially given the other fantastic films in the competition. I would like to thank the Festival and the judges for this recognition, I believe I can confidently say that Philip Lynott would be utterly chuffed to receive this award!”.

Colm Forde, Head of Programming, Doc'n Roll Film Festival added, “Featuring six documentaries that covered a wide range of music genres from hard rock to experimental electronica, 2020's Best Music Documentary short-list was our strongest to date. In what was a very close race, I'm glad to say that Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away won overall on the strength of its cinematic style, technique and attributes”.

The Doc'n Roll Film Festival celebrates music subcultures by providing a unique platform to support the wealth of creative, compelling and unforgettable documentaries that celebrate the performers, labels, scenes and stories.
