Figures released today by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) spotlight the power of Home Entertainment in the UK, as its value rose to £3.7 billion in 2021.

James Bond and No Time To Die was the biggest selling title of the year across all retail, contributing to the biggest Download and Keep (Electronic Sell-Through or EST) week since records began at Christmas, while Wonder Woman 1984 (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group) was the best-selling rental title (Video on Demand or VOD), in a year with 27.4 million digital rental (VOD) transactions.

Based on data from the Official Charts Company, Futuresource Consulting, Omdia, and Kantar, this means a 13.3% growth Year on Year (YOY), finishing 2021 on a high for the industry, and proving that entertainment-hungry audiences responded to the changes made by the entertainment industry during lockdown to ensure they got access to the content they loved.

Lockdown restrictions meant cinemas closed in the UK for the first half of 2021, and the lack of big screen blockbusters was felt at home throughout the rest of the year, with just over half the number of normal releases in cinemas. But a game-changing £96 million UK Box Office (BO) for Daniel Craig in No Time To Die in the autumn set the stage for a huge Home Entertainment comeback at the end of the year.

No Time To Die became the biggest selling Home Entertainment title of 2021 in the last two weeks of the year, with sales of 1,148,000 units across both disc and Download and Keep (EST).

It scored the biggest Blu-ray and DVD week one release since 2017 with 621,000 units sold, and is the biggest selling title of the year on Download and Keep (EST), with sales of over 430,000. On Blu-ray it sold 237,000 units, of which 15% were 4K UHD, making it the largest week one ever delivered on 4K UHD.

No Time To Die spotlights the Home Entertainment choices now available to consumers, with a big-screen release followed by Premium Video On Demand (PVOD), download and keep (Electronic Sell-Through or EST), DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD, with traditional digital rental (Video On Demand or VOD) still to come.

Audiences are now poised for a content-packed 2022, led by the release of Spiderman: No Way Home (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), which flew through the £50 million UK Box Office barrier in December, to a current, and still growing, cumulative UK Box Office of £72m, and is the first blockbuster to break the global $1 billion threshold since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (The Walt Disney Company) in 2019. Official data from Gower Street now predicts the number of Blockbusters in 2022 has risen to 22, at a time where 62% of the UK are actively engaging in the entertainment screen-to-screen experience.

The power growth of the Subscription channels (SVOD) slowed but steadied in 2021, with YoY growth of 28% , down from the 44% surge of 2020. 16 million of the 27 million total GB Households had at least one SVOD account by the autumn, with the average amount of subscriptions per household holding at 2.3 services per household . Netflix remained the largest UK Subscription
service , followed by Amazon Prime, Disney+, NOW, and Apple TV.

The popularity of TV titles continued across 2021 where, once again, TV titles grew their share of the physical market, reinforcing the power of traditional broadcast and subscription premiere titles across transactional formats: Game of Thrones Complete 8th Season (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group), Supernatural: The Complete 15th Season (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group), Star Trek Picard: Season One (Paramount Home Entertainment, distributed by Elevation Sales), and The Crown: Season Four and Season Three boxsets (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) collectively sold 189k units , while the combined sales of Doctor Who, Doctor Who Classic and the newest season of Doctor Who (BBC Studios) sold over 282K units.

Early forecasts suggest that 2022 may be the biggest year on record for Home Entertainment. Liz Bales, Chief Executive, BASE said: “Throughout this pandemic, entertainment at home was the refuge that many chose to take from an uncertain world, and it became clearer than perhaps ever before: audiences are the life-blood that fuels our industry. Serving audiences the content they love is driving a new, innovative world of Home Entertainment. Last year, faced with challenge, our industry was forced to adapt, but now, because of those changes, 2022 may be the biggest and best year for Home Entertainment ever.’
