Martial arts superstar Jet Li plays the title role in this dazzling action flick that won several awards including ‘Best Choreography Award’, ‘Best Martial Arts Direction’ and ‘Best Editing’.

Generally considered one of the most breathtaking kick-fests of the 1990’s, The Legend Of Fong Sai-Yuk is set during China’s early Ching Dynasty. It tells the story of a ruthless emperor who enslaves his people and then proceeds to persecute a group of revolutionaries out to destroy his corrupt and powerful regime. Folk hero Fong Sai-Yuk jumps into action to save the day and his people when he discovers that his own father is a freedom fighter too, targeted for retribution. Admittedly, the plot is not exactly shining with new ideas, but it’s the spectacular action sequences that turn this adventure into a different cup of jasmine tea. Small surprise, considering that the film’s director was responsible for movies such as Lethal Weapon 4 and X-Men.

Mind-boggling gymnastics like somersaulting and kicking on a burning tightrope, performing gravity-defying moves on a scaffold-like construction, or a duel atop the heads of a standing crowd are only some of the stunts that will make your jaw drop. The female of the species are just as swift and fierce as their male counterparts. The opening sequence alone is as colourful as it is spectacular, with 17th century surfer assassins invading dragon boat gondolas, slicing more than just red lanterns in the process.
This Special Collector’s DVD has several Extras like the ‘Hit Hard and Fly High’ as well as the ‘The Pen is Mightier Than The Sword’ interviews. Language is Cantonese with optional English subtitles.
