Pussycake -

An Argentinian all female rock band sharing the surname ‘cake’ have just played an excellent concert and are taken by their not terribly bright manager to a second show that night. It’s an out-of-town venue that they virtually derelict and no sign that there is anything there, let alone ready for a band.

Variously high on drugs and the good gig they have performed the band Juli (Sofia Rossi) Elle Cake (Maca Suarez), Sara Cake (Aldana Ruberto), Juli Cake (Sofia Rossi) and Sofi Cake (Anahi Politi, the band instead trip into a mix of alien invasion and incubation and milk-vomiting ‘zombies’ wrapped up in a great orgy of violence.

There’s some allusion to a multiverse and an experiment gone wrong at the start and through the film, though that becomes secondary once the film settles into the rhythm of the band in peril and their travails that variously relies on cleavers, knives and crossbows to sort things out leading to over-the-top set pieces.

It’s all over the top grindhouse nonsense from director Pablo Parés with the viewer just looking and waiting what is going to happen next to the band. There’s not much in the way of character development, only Elle and the abuse she received from her ex has any real background, with her tormented by nightmares. However at 75 minutes this was never going to an in-depth study into anything, rather it’s a scuzzy rampage of violence with the viewer knowing full well that some characters aren’t going to get out, and if they have built a rapport with one, hope they survive.

The actors are all very comfortable with what they have and generally work well with the steady stream of banter supplied by writer Maxi Ferzzola. This is all great fun and unchallenging stuff unless the viewer wants to indulge in spot the influence or references. Two to start off with are Inseminoid and Motel Hell.
