Born female and named Lots, it wasn’t until he was into a burgeoning musical career that he came out as transgender and Dylan Holloway.
Tomorrow’s Too Late is an intimate and thoughtful documentary that covers Dylan’s early life and career to date. It is for the most part upbeat though doesn’t skimp on some of his thoughtlessness post transition.
The documentary isn’t quite linear so there are flashbacks to his toddler years with his sister and learning his craft as a musician and songwriter. There’s his experience with the X Factor and the band MK1. Though successful, it’s not what he wanted to do so left to develop his own music.
Naturally the documentary’s focus is on Lots’ transition to Dylan. There is physical change with his top surgery and then the more interesting and sensitive change of the hormone treatment that would gradually change his voice.
That proved to be one of the most difficult parts. Dylan as Lots had built up a library of songs that were loved but that he would no longer be able to sing due to the changes with his voice.
Watching Dylan’s frustration as the HRT kicks in, and unable to sing those song’s is heartbreaking. It didn’t incumber his songwriting as such but they are songs that many in his audience wanted to hear and he enjoyed performing. The only real solution was to change the key.
This in turn made him reflect on his earlier career and began exploring how to use his pre-transition voice with his new material. He began recording duets which acted as a way to connect with his former and new career. Its unique and very moving.
This touches on an interesting aspect of Dylan’s transition, and arguably darker. He celebrates his first year on HRT as a bona fide first birthday. In effect washing away his existence before HRT.
That was distressing for his parents with stories of him blotting out pre-transition photos of himself. Credit to him that he recognises those actions as a mistake.
Other than that the film is positive, good humoured and life-affirming. There are the usual contributions from friends, colleagues and family.
Tomorrow’s Too Late will play exclusively at The Arzner, London’s LGBTQ+ cinema in Bermondsey, London from 24 July 2026.
