Heraldry Paranormal

Heraldry Paranormal is a Yorkshire based paranormal research group. It is made up of brothers Finley (Jimmy Roberts), Seamus (Ashley Nashville) a researcher Emerson (Tara Buranakul). The other member is Finley’s girlfriend Blair (Parker Paige) working remotely from the USA as an editor, whom he’s never met in person. Their neighbour Ray (Lance J. Parker) while not a formal member of the group is around should they need an extra hand.

Their cause is finding a true supernatural event with Finley setting a very high level that annoys his competitors. Namely Rosie (Kate Hargrave) whom they very publicly humiliate as a fake. That social media attack is later turned on them when a house they investigate turns out to be a fake, only for the owner to accuse them of arranging the whole thing for their own ends.

This badly damages them and they have difficulty getting cases until one comes up that appears authentic. However, due to a mix up they have to work with Rosie against what proves to be something far more dangerous than they expected.

Written and directed by Ashley Nashville what is clear from the off is the cast are fully committed and enjoying it. There’s a knowing raggedness at times which suits the home footage element. This tends to be a hallmark of the whole social media ghost hunter sub-genre, and it is starting to look tired.

The main problem here is the comedy and narrative which don’t quite work and for much of the film it’s frustrating trying to engage with the characters.

That is until the investigation in the house takes Seamus and Finley into a room/basement. Here Nashville shows a deft hand by using little lighting and the shadows they cast in the confined spaces. This builds tension and dread something Nashville does very effectively. It stands out in the film as incongruous but as a pointer for the future.
