Buckle up for one hell of a fun ride in this adventure series from the 70’s. Although primarily aimed at a young audience, this brew contains enough ingredients to make it enjoyable for adults, too!

Set on the Cornish coast around 1770, the opening sequence alone sets the tone. It’s a dark night with heavy rain, and we see how a ship gets lured to its doom by the cunning wreckers of Thriabbas. The ‘Wreckers’ are an organized crime gang led by the villainous Eye-Patch (Arthur White in a wonderful over-the-top performance), carving out a living from the loot of wrecked ships.

Only this time there is a survivor: the young Persian princess Soraya (Claire Benjamin in a role that requires her to faint and scream a lot). As a witness to the crime, the gang are after her in an effort to silence her for good, alas a handful of villagers – led by an eccentric and retired sea captain and his two young protégés, find the princess and take her under their protective wing.

Not for long though, as the wreckers leave no cutlass unturned and no blunderbuss unloaded in order to get to the princess. Along the gibbet-ridden way, plot and sub-plots unfold, and certain characters are not what they initially seem to be.

It’s rip-roaring good fun to watch, with authentic costumes, atmospheric scenery, brilliantly staged fights, and bad teeth that give Cap’n Jack Sparrow a run for his money!

Originally broadcast on British TV in the 1970s, Wreckers At Dead Eye is now available on DVD (six episodes with approx. 30 min running time each). Sound is in mono, and no bonus material is on offer.
