We all know what to expect by now from the Saw series. Jaw cracking, limb twisting, disembowelling torture devices right out of the Dark Ages timed to exact their terrible and somewhat dubious justice on the morally, criminally and/or ethically reprehensible members of our wonderful human race and this one is no different (hoorah!) In this latest foray into the warped mindset of Jigsaw justice we have the coming together of his grand scheme and the tying up of his personal life and death story.
Synopsis: Special Agent Strahm is dead and Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), Jigsaw’s Protégée has emerged as his rightful successor to continue his grisly work. Hoffman sets about completing Jigsaws final “beyond the grave” judgement on those that “done him wrong” while he was dying of incurable cancer. This time it is the turn of the insurance company and their band of despicable men and women. However, the FBI are closing in and Hoffman is forced to deal with his possible capture while maintaining the final game of his former master.
Is it all that it’s cracked up to be?
Saw VI is definitely the best film since the second one in the series with a nice little twist or two as usual thrown in but has a fairly predictable ending. As a big Saw fan, I would recommend this film wholeheartedly, especially if you enjoy the psychological aspects and dilemmas posed in the Saw movies, as I do, as much as the out and out mangling of body parts. . Tobin Bell (Jigsaw) is excellent, as usual, and a good performance by Peter Outerbridge as the vile Insurance Exec William Easton holds this film together nicely. However, the bigger budget that the later films have had, has not entirely improved the films overall. Saw and Saw II had poorer quality film (documentary quality) and the slightly washed out, graininess of the filming gave them a far grittier and sinister feel, in my opinion, and these later films with the full bright colour, smooth Hollywood blockbuster film look has lost that edge and real dingy menace that I and II had in abundance
Will there be a VII? Decide for yourself.
